It was at school helping a friend develop a roll of film that Nic Barlow was immediately hooked by photography. Consequently, he took a degree in graphic design at the Bath Academy of Art and then moved to London as a freelance photographer. Thanks to a book about life at Eton College which featured his photographs (Eton Days published by Lund Humphries), he began to get commissions from magazines such as Vogues Hommes, Harpers & Queen, Town & Country, Geo Magazine, Newsweek, Tatler and The Sunday Times.

He has produced many books on subjects that include German follies, A Celebration of champagne, Chatsworth Estate, Scottish border ballads, Small London museums and The Illustrated Mrs Beeton.

He has also had six one-man exhibitions: The Rebecca Hossack Gallery (2001), The Oxo Tower Gallery (2003), Edinburgh Botanical Gardens (2007), Birmingham Botanical Gardens (2007), Petworth House (2008) and The Brighton and Hove Museum (2009).
